History of Turkey 



The history of Turkey is rich and diverse, spanning over thousands of years. It is located at the crossroads of Europe and Asia, making it a unique cultural and historical destination.


Prehistoric Period:


The earliest inhabitants of what is now Turkey were the Hittites, who lived in the region around 2000 BC. Later, the Phrygians and Lydians established powerful kingdoms in the area. In the 6th century BC, the Greeks founded colonies along the coast and established city-states.


Roman and Byzantine Empires:


In 63 BC, the Roman Empire conquered the region, making it a province known as Asia Minor. The Byzantine Empire, which was the Eastern Roman Empire, ruled the area from the 4th century AD until the 15th century.


Seljuk Turks and Ottoman Empire:


In the 11th century, the Seljuk Turks, a nomadic tribe from Central Asia, invaded and conquered the region, establishing the Sultanate of Rum. The Turks were defeated by the Mongols in the 13th century, but the region was later re-conquered by the Ottomans in the 14th century.


The Ottoman Empire became one of the most powerful empires in the world, controlling much of Eastern Europe, the Middle East, and North Africa. The empire lasted from the late 13th century until its dissolution in 1922 after World War I.


Republic of Turkey:


Following the fall of the Ottoman Empire, Mustafa Kemal Atatürk led the establishment of the Republic of Turkey in 1923. Atatürk modernized and secularized the country, implementing significant reforms in areas such as education, law, and women's rights.


Turkey remained neutral during World War II but later joined NATO in 1952 and became a significant ally of the United States during the Cold War. Turkey has also played a key role in regional politics, such as the Cyprus conflict, and has experienced several coups and periods of political instability.


Today, Turkey is a vibrant and modern country, with a rich history and diverse culture that continues to draw visitors from all over the world.
